Each year 1.1 million Americans suffer an acute myocardial infarction or heart attack. This is caused when a blood clot forms in one of the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle. These clots form in an area where cholesterol has been deposited within the blood vessel lining causing a narrowing. The key to survival and minimizing heart damage is early restoration of normal blood flow within the heart artery. State of the art therapy involves a procedure called angioplasty and stenting, which removes the blood clot and opens the narrowing within the vessel.
Lawrence and Memorial hospital is the only hospital in Southeastern Connecticut to offer an emergency angioplasty service for acute myocardial infarction. Under the leadership of Dr. Brian Cambi, and in conjunction with Eastern Connecticut Cardiology, a team of highly trained nurses, technologists, and interventional cardiologists is on standby 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to perform this emergency procedure.
Dr. Cambi is board certified in Internal medicine and Cardiovascular diseases with advanced training and board certification in Interventional Cardiology. He received this training at Yale University and continues to be supported by his partners from Yale to provide this service.
Following the procedure, an exceptional team of highly qualified cardiologists from the Eastern Connecticut Cardiology Group follows the patients throughout their hospitalization, and after discharge providing the care necessary to maintain their cardiovascular health in the future.
