After two stints in the Joint Replacement Center at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, Joy is back to doing what she loves best - living an active, comfortable lifestyle.     Lawrence + Memorial Hospital has a designated post-surgical unit for specialized care where patients begin their recovery in a comfortable environment, with specialty trained staff. Our goal is to make you comfortable during your stay, while getting you quickly on the road to recovery and rehabilitation. The Joint Replacement post-operative unit offers the following:

    • Interdisciplinary approach toward patient-centered care at the bedside
    • Private rooms for total joint replacement patients
    • The latest in hospital patient bed technology
    • Individualized inpatient rehabilitation, post-operatively on the orthopedic nursing unit
    • Flat screen TVs in every patient room

    The team works closely with referring physicians to guide each patient from pre-surgery education through post-surgery rehabilitation and recovery. Minimizing your pain is a goal of the team. Prior to surgery, your plan of pain management is determined by your surgeon and reviewed with you, so you understand the course of treatment which will be taken post-operatively.

    Once you are home, your rehabilitation can continue with outpatient physical therapy rehabilitation, available through Lawrence + Memorial's Signature Rehabilitation sites conveniently located in East Lyme, Waterford and Groton.

    Patient Education

    The program emphasizes patient education, including pre-operative educational classes for patients scheduled for joint replacement at L+M. Preoperative classes are designed to fully educate patients and families on what to expect pre operative, while in the hospital, and discharge planning. Being aware and educated has the ability to decrease anxiety and maximize your joint replacements results. Classes are run by Registered Nurse, Case Management and Physical Therapy. Bring a “coach” with, so that both of you can get the most out of the education and information provided.
