Biography

John Kazianis, MD, is an intensivist, or a critical care physician who treats patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), and says it is gratifying to help patients—and their families—during incredibly difficult times.

“I enjoy interacting with families of very sick patients and guiding them through a very intense period in their loved one’s life and helping them make decisions,” he says. “I like to do what is best for the patient, but even if we can’t get them to the point that they walk out of the hospital healthy, I feel better if I can at least make them feel comfortable and explain a really scary situation to family members so they can understand what is going on and better cope.”

Dr. Kazianis says he also like treating the complex diseases that present in the ICU, including sepsis and ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome).

“Patients are living longer these days, so their care becomes more complicated,” he says. “As an intensivist, we are like the primary care doctors of the ICU and, in a sense, we are experts in every organ as it pertains to the ICU.”

Dr. Kazianis is actively involved in research and is currently the sub-investigator in an I-SPY COVID-19 clinical trial that is looking to identify therapies for COVID-19 patients with ARDS.
