Orthopedics

Orthopedics at L+M Hospital means specialized surgical and non-surgical care to meet each patient’s individual musculoskeletal needs. Services include: sports medicine; minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures; laser surgery; arthritis care; treatment for fractures, broken bones and spinal conditions; nerve and tendon repairs; hand, elbow and shoulder care, and also complete and partial joint replacement surgery.

L+M’s board-certified surgeons use only the latest proven techniques and materials to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. L+M care is convenient and close to home, with a Same-Day Surgery Center at the Pequot Health Center off Interstate 95 in Groton. In New London, our state-of-the-art Joint Replacement Center at L+M Hospital is certified by the Joint Commission for total-knee and total-hip replacement surgeries.

L+M’s orthopedic care is patient-centered and holistic, which means our doctors and our staff help guide and educate patients through their care to ensure a positive outcome, including pre-surgical preparation and post-surgical rehabilitation. L+M also has the region’s only inpatient rehabilitation unit and three outpatient rehabilitation sites at Pequot, Flanders and Waterford.

Emergency orthopedic care at L+M includes the region’s only Pediatric Emergency Program, separate and more comforting for children.

Specific areas of orthopedic care include:

Hand and Wrist

Few parts of our body are more important to daily activity that our hands. L+M orthopedic services for hands include arthritis surgery, fracture repair, tendon repair, carpal tunnel surgery and other procedures. L+M also has a dedicated Hand Center which can help patients with even the most complex issues, including total wrist replacement surgery. L+M also has a certified hand therapist on staff to help patients with physical therapy along the road to full recovery.

Shoulder

Shoulder problems– rotator cuff disease, arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis and other conditions –prevent many people from enjoying the activities they love. L+M’s goal is to restore maximum function for all patients with shoulder injuries or disease. Procedures at L+M include instability repair, rotator cuff repair, labral repair, spur removal, cartilage repair, fracture repair, shoulder replacement, reverse shoulder replacement, and revision shoulder replacement.

Elbow

The common term “tennis elbow” (lateral epicondylitis) doesn’t affect just tennis players. This form of inflammation of the tendons can be caused from overuse due to many activities. L+M’s doctors will often take a multifaceted approach to elbow injury or disease, which may include surgery but could also include bracing, physical therapy and possibly steroid injections.

Hip

Bursitis and arthritis are common causes of hip discomfort, and they can often result in the need for intensive therapies in order to help the patient maintain function. A full complement of surgical options are available at L+M, including total hip replacement surgery in L+M's Joint Replacement Center, which is certified for total hip replacements by the Joint Commission.

Knee

We often hear about athletes recovering from “ACL” injuries, but a torn ligament around the knee can happen to anyone. At L+M, a full spectrum of knee care is available to treat ligament damage, arthritis and more. Procedures include arthroscopy, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery, posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) surgery, meniscal repair, cartilage repair, multi-ligament knee reconstruction, knee osteotomy, total and partial knee repair, and knee revision surgery.

Foot and Ankle

Despite its size, the ankle supports about five times a person’s weight when walking, and its health is critical to activity and mobility. Orthopedic care for ankles is comprehensive at L+M, with care ranging from tendon, ligament and cartilage repairs to arthroscopy.

Spine

L+M’s orthopedic surgeons work closely with L+M’s neurosurgery team. Commonly treated conditions include spinal stenosis, arthritis, herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, spinal fractures, compression fractures, spinal tumors and other conditions.
