Great Catch winners help YNHH become a high reliability organization

bulletin

Nicole Starkey-Cox, RN; Liz Nolan-Integlia, RN

Congratulations to these Great Catch winners for modeling HRO safety behaviors and taking action to improve patient safety.

Nicole Starkey-Cox, RN, Emergency Department, was recognized for attention to detail and 200% accountability. A patient arrived at the York Street Campus ED saying they had abdominal pain after lifting a heavy object. Because the patient had a medical history of an umbilical hernia, a CT scan of the abdomen was ordered. Starkey-Cox’s “internal smoke detector” prompted her to escalate her concerns and advocate for an EKG, also. Test results revealed a cardiac event and the patient was sent to the Cardiac Catheterization Lab for timely treatment.

Liz Nolan-Integlia, RN, YM Care Center, was recognized for attention to detail and practicing a questioning attitude when a patient’s wife called to say her husband was experiencing episodes of losing consciousness. Nolan-Integlia urged her to take him to the Emergency Department, but the wife was hesitant. Nolan-Integlia then had a long conversation with the wife and the patient’s brother, who agreed to take him to the ED. The patient was admitted with worsening heart failure, severe aortic stenosis and a blood clot in the left ventricle and was subsequently scheduled for aortic valve repair.
