Program helps patients get the help they need

HPAs
The program’s HPAs include (l-r): Shevonne Mack, Gregory Johnson, Damaris Navarro and Priscilla Verzi.

Project ASSERT in April celebrated 17 years of helping patients who are struggling with alcohol and other types of substance use disorders access the treatment they need. Over the years, Health Promotion Advocates (HPAs) in the emergency departments at both YNHH campuses have connected more than 48,000 patients with community-based alcohol and drug treatment services. Project ASSERT’s unique approach includes screening, a brief intervention and direct referral to specialized care – all while patients are in the ED.
