PEACE winners announced

Recipients of the Patient Experience Award for Caring and Excellence (PEACE) are honored with two trophies – one for the winning employee to keep and one for the employee’s department to display for the month until the next recipients are named. Anyone, including patients and their families, may nominate a YNHH employee, physician or volunteer who displays service excellence qualities and the values of patient-centered care, respect, compassion, integrity and accountability. While helping a mother secure an infant in a car seat, Cristal Saccu, senior registrar, Emergency Department, noticed the car seat was broken. Saccu made arrangements within the hospital and delivered a new car seat to the family.

Douglas Bernstein, MD, was credited with saving a man’s life in the Saint Raphael Campus Emergency Department. The patient presented with pain he believed was from a kidney infection or hernia, but Dr. Bernstein suspected an abdominal aortic aneurysm. When a CT scan proved him correct, Dr. Bernstein explained the situation to the patient and his wife, calmed their fears and stayed with the patient beyond his shift to see him admitted.
