Charles Crocco, RN, Emergency Department, was recognized for acts of compassion toward a patient who arrived to the ED in acute distress on her birthday. After she was cleared by the physician to eat, Crocco brought the patient a sandwich and used an app on his phone to display a digital candle. He joined the patient’s family in singing “Happy Birthday.” The patient was ultimately admitted but died two days later. Her family expressed thanks to Crocco for helping them celebrate the patient’s final birthday with her.

Surgical ICU (SP 6-1) staff were honored collectively for exemplary patient- and family-centered care for a young patient who suffered a devastating spinal injury. As the patient’s condition deteriorated, staff worked closely with others from Social Work, the Pediatric ICU and New England Donor Services to provide support and information to the family as they prepared for the patient’s passing. When the time arrived for the organ donation, the SICU team performed a “walk of honor,” lining the hallway as the patient was being transported. Several members of the team also later attended the patient’s wake, for which the family was grateful.

All employees, physicians and volunteers are eligible for the monthly PEACE recognition. Send nominations to: [email protected].
