Archives display shows hospital’s resiliency in the face of adversity

Many times during its 194-year history, Yale New Haven Hospital has been challenged to care for people under extraordinary circumstances. The latest YNHH Archives display in the York Street Campus Atrium lobby looks back at war times and early epidemics, when the hospital was pushed beyond its limits and needed to expand its scope and knowledge to accommodate people’s needs. Yale New Haven Hospital, During Times of Transformation, will run through Sept. 16. During September 1918, New Haven Hospital and the rest of the world saw the beginning of the influenza pandemic. October alone brought 563 new admissions, while half of the hospital’s doctors and nurses had also fallen ill. Pictured is an entry from the December 1918 Board of Lady Visitors book describing conditions at the hospital. By the end of the pandemic, there were 388 deaths among the 1,451 patients treated at New Haven Hospital.
