Overview

Having a baby is one of life’s most amazing and gratifying experiences. At L+M Hospital, our maternity services aim to give all parents and their newborns the safest, friendliest, most compassionate and highly competent care in the region. Lawrence + Memorial Hospital prides itself on its training, experience and state-of-the-art equipment, where the safety and health of you and your newborn is always our top concern.

Yale New Haven Health is proud to be recognized by the National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program for educating parents about safe sleep practices for newborns. The certification was created by Cribs for Kids ®, a national infant safe sleep organization dedicated to preventing infant sleep-related injuries and deaths due to sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) and accidental suffocation. Yale New Haven Health holds a bronze-level, system-wide designation.

Maternity Unit

Located on the 4th floor of the main hospital, the 24-bed unit of L+M Maternity Services (often called LDRP, for Labor, Delivery, Recovery and Post-partum) has the area’s most respected team of doctors, midwives, nurses and support services, ready to care for women through all stages of their pregnancy.

Our maternity unit is equipped with the most advanced technologies, including central surveillance of all live fetal heart rate tracings, state-of-the-art labor/maternity rooms, a triage area for assessment and ante-partum evaluation, a fully staffed nursery and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

There are also two operating room suites located on the maternity unit staffed with certified surgical technicians around the clock.

Many members of our nursing team hold specialty certifications in maternal newborn nursing, inpatient obstetrics, childbirth education, lactation, and all are certified in electronic fetal monitoring.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Our NICU – the only one of its kind in southeastern Connecticut – is a Level IIIA NICU and cares for any infant that requires extra medical services after delivery. L+M strives to keep the family unit together with our onsite NICU and neonatology practitioners who are at the hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ready to care for any baby that may need their services.

Preparing for Your Hospital Stay and Recovery

To help you prepare for your hospital stay, we are offering a free online course, available in multiple languages. It may take up to 60 minutes to complete the course. We recommend you take part during your third trimester, a few weeks before your due date. You are welcome to review it together with your partner or support people.

You will learn:

  • What to expect at the hospital after birth and how to make the most out of your stay
  • What is considered “normal” after birth for you and your baby and when to call for help
  • How to plan for your discharge and arrival back home

Why learn this now?

Things can be hectic in the days after birth in the hospital and you will be tired. Now is a better time for you to be able to remember the information.

Knowing what to expect can help you have a more satisfying patient and new-parent experience.
