With locations in New London and Groton, emergency medical care at L+M combines state-of-the-art technology, time-saving processes and personal attention, always with the goal of giving each patient the correct care in the fastest and most effective manner.

L+M’s emergency capabilities are among the most sophisticated in the region, with, for example, the only emergency angioplasty program for heart attack victims in all of eastern Connecticut. L+M also has an award-winning Stroke Center, extensive diagnostic imaging capabilities (such as CT and MRI), and a new, separate Pediatric Emergency Department operating seven days a week from 3 to 11 p.m.

All L+M Emergency Services physicians are board-certified in emergency medicine, and many of our nurses are certified in emergency nursing. Innovative programs in our emergency rooms, such as “Doc-in-Triage” and “FastER Care,” have led to increased patient satisfaction.

Whether a patient’s medical needs are minor or life threatening, L+M’s emergency team is always ready to act appropriately, giving each individual timely, professional and compassionate care.

Emergency Angioplasty(or PCI):

Emergency angioplasty – also known, as emergency PCI, which stands for percutaneous coronary intervention – is the most effective way to treat most heart attack victims, saving heart muscle and saving lives. At L+M, Yale-affiliated cardiologists are on call round-the-clock to provide the service, which involves inserting an image-guided catheter into a patient’s arteries, finding the blood clot that is causing the heart attack, clearing the clot, and, finally, inserting a balloon device and stent to keep the artery open. Patients can also be transferred to L+M’s Coronary Care Unit for additional care if necessary. Time is of the essence when treating heart attack victims, and L+M’s PCI times exceed the national standard of 90 minutes in a vast majority of cases, with 62 minutes being the hospital’s most common “door to balloon” time.

Pediatric Emergency Program:

Separate from L+M’s busy main Emergency Department, our Pediatric Emergency Program location features generally shorter wait times and a family-friendly environment, both of which help to reduce family stress in a time of crises. Children from infant to as old as 21 years will be treated by physicians who are fellowship trained in pediatric emergency medicine. While the L+M Emergency Department can treat children at any time of the day or night, the pediatric ED is an extension of services, with the goal of improving patient satisfaction, fostering healing, and providing additional comfort for both children and their parents.

The L+M Stroke Center:

Designated as a “Primary Stroke Center” by the state and as an “Advanced Primary Stroke Center” from the Joint Commission, L+M is proud to offer some of the fastest and most effective treatments for stroke, including clot-busting drugs that can save patients from brain loss. The L+M Stroke Center has an on-staff stroke trained neurologist who can diagnose stroke and administer treatment within minutes if necessary. Also, L+M’s Telestroke program with Yale provides 24/7 communication with stroke-trained neurologists, so patients can always be treated quickly to preserve brain function in the critical early onset of stroke.

Physician-In-Triage:

Emergency Care at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital includes an innovative approach to greeting and treating patients as they arrive. During the hours of 11a.m. to 11 p.m., patients arriving to the Emergency Department will be assessed by both a physician and a nurse in the triage area. This means tests, minor treatments and medicines are ordered and administered faster, which improves care.

FastER Care:

The FastER care unit of Lawrence + Memorial Hospital's Emergency Services Department is equipped to care for patients with less acute illnesses and injuries in a competent and efficient manner. The FastER care area is open from 11am to 11pm every day, and is staffed by a physician who can provide the care you need so you can go home and begin feeling better.
