The current national nursing shortage affects hospitals nationwide, but L+M Hospital may have a future advantage, thanks to a bachelor’s degree nursing program beginning in the fall at nearby Mitchell College.
“Programs that will help reduce the shortage of nurses are a win-win for everyone,” said Shannon Christian, RN, chief nursing officer for L+M and Westerly hospitals, who serves on the Mitchell College board. “We look forward to collaborating with Mitchell College on clinical opportunities for these students.”
The college plans to enroll 36 nursing students, divided into two groups, in its first year. A room inside Mitchell’s Bingham Hall has been transformed into The Edward and Mary Lord Nursing Simulation and Skills Laboratory, complete with monitors, medical equipment and beds occupied by seven manikins, including pediatric and infant versions. During the six-semester program, students participate in classroom lectures and clinical sessions overseen by L+M – the program’s lead clinical partner – and Shoreline Therapy behavioral health group, the state Department of Corrections and Colchester and Waterford public schools.
