Auxiliary

The mission of the Auxiliary of Lawrence + Memorial Hospital is to support the hospital in its efforts to improve the health and well-being of the community.

History

The Auxiliary of Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, founded in 1914, has been supporting the hospital for 108 years.

Two years after the opening of the Joseph Lawrence Free Public Hospital, a small and dedicated group of women, led by Nanine Lawrence Pond, created the Auxiliary. It has grown to include hundreds of volunteers who have devoted thousands of hours to help L+M Hospital improve the health of the community and meet the needs of its patients in southeastern Connecticut.

The Auxiliary currently has 206 life and annual members. In 2020, during the pandemic, members generously responded to the Auxiliary’s fundraising effort and provided $50,000 in gifts to L+M Hospital in support of a variety of programs benefiting patients, their families and the community.

Our funding has helped support such programs and departments as Speech and Language Pathology, the Visiting Nurse Association of Southeastern Connecticut, Respiratory and Renal, “The Daisy Award” and the Healing Garden — an area set aside for families and friends who need a place to find comfort and quiet. In addition, we have supported the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Special Needs Closet and the Move a Muscle Program.

Most recently, our annual funding awards contributed $20,000 in support of such programs as Cardiac Rehab, Patient Experience, Pediatrics and Critical Diagnostics.
