As a team of specially trained physcians and nurse practioners, we offer treatment plans individualized to the unique needs of each patient whose wounds have not healed through standard therapies.

The L+M Wound + Hyperbaric Center is located in the Waterfall Plaza, Waterford, next to L+M's Outpatient Rehabilitation site.

Amputation Prevention Program

Two serious complications of diabetes is loss of circulation to and reduced sensation of the feet. This combination puts patients with diabetes at a greater risk for foot ulcers that can lead to infection and amputation. However, most amputations due to diabetes are preventable.

The Amputation Prevention Program at L+M's Wound + Hyperbaric Center utilizes many specialties to prevent amputations such as vascular surgery, podiatry/podiatric surgery, infectious disease and endocrinology. The integrated, multi-specialty approach can help diabetic patients with foot ulcers avoid amputation, heal those ulcers, and return to their normal life.

Hard-to-Heal Wounds

There is frequently an underlying health issue in patients with chronic, non-healing wounds, preventing the wound from healing in a natural fashion.

Some of the more common underlying medical conditions include: diabetes, vascular disease, and immobility.

Common Wound Management Indications:

Treatment of Hard-to-Heal Wounds

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is breathing 100% oxygen while under roughly twice normal atmospheric pressure.

This treatment increases the amount of the dissolved oxygen that is available to the body's tissues. The treatment is performed in a hyperbaric chamber.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been shown to increase the formation of new blood vessels in damaged tissue (angiogenesis), increase the proliferation of fibroblasts (cells that produce granulation tissue and protein, which is necessary for wound healing), increase growth factors necessary for the repair of damaged tissues, and increase antimicrobial activity.

When used for wound healing, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used as part of a complete wound treatment plan.

Benefit of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been shown to increase the formation of new blood vessels in damaged tissue, increase the proliferation of fibroblasts (cells that compromise the body's tissue) which produce collagen (a protein necessary for wound healing), increase growth factors necessary for the repair of damaged tissues, and increase antimicrobial activity.

Common Outpatient Hyperbaric Indications:

  • Diabetic foot wounds
  • Infections including chronic refractory osteomyelitis (bone infection)
  • At-risk surgical grafts and flaps
  • Crush injuries
  • Injury to tissues from radiation therapy
  • Burns
  • Severe anemias
  • Acute peripheral vascular disease
